Nairobi, Kenya – The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has announced a temporary closure of its services, effective Friday, December 29, 2023, to Monday, January 1, 2024.
This followed directives from President William Ruto’s administration, requiring all government entities to migrate their services to the eCitizen platform by the end of 2023.
Ruto directed that payments for all government services should be made through one pay bill number 222222 to ensure better management and transparency in revenue collection.
When will NTSA services commence?
In a public notice released on Friday, December 29, NTSA said it will shut down TIMS port for the migration process and limit transactions on its services, which resume on Tuesday, January 2.
“During the period, all NTSA online service access will be integrated with eCitizen single sign on, in preparation for the Go-live on Tuesday, January 2, 2023,” the NTSA notice read in part.
Once the services have been fully migrated, Kenyans will get access to NTSA services using their eCitizen platform login credentials.
New number plate deadline
The move caused debate among Kenyans, with the majority requesting if it would affect their application of the new number plates.
@Navz0017 asked:
“How do I go about applying for the new no plate in this new system?”
@ntsa_kenya replied:
“You can apply from 2nd January.”
@Kamugikamau asked:
“When is the deadline for the new plates?”
@ntsa_kenya replied:
“We will inform the public in due course.”
So far, the government has onboarded over 14,000 services available and payable through the eCitizen platform.
Payment for eCitizen services
This has seen revenue from the eCitizen platform surpass the KSh 900 million per day mark as of December 2023.
Immigration and Citizen Services PS Julius Bitok said that the latest data revealed that KSh 903.6 million was collected on Wednesday 20th December 2023.
“Of the amount, nearly a third was generated from transactions in US dollars totalling $1,446,495 compared to the Ksh 680.4 million in the local currency,” said Bitok in a statement.
This followed a move by the National Treasury to raise the service charge fees for all eCitizen services.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary (CS) Njuguna Ndung’u said the changes take effect immediately and will only be waived where applicable.
“The charges will be applicable on all services unless otherwise waived by the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning. The charges take effect immediately,” Ndung’u said in a gazette notice dated December 14, 2023.
