Interesting facts about Celine Dion

Celine Dion is one of
the most popular pop stars across the world. Her musical career can be traced
back more than 30 years ago, and is best recognized for her excellent
performance of “My Heart Will Go On” from the movie “titanic”, Dion’s life and
work can not only be identified by one song. Celine Dion`s story is unique as
she has grown from a humble background to be one of the best and most loved
vocalists of all time. Being iconic to many people these are some fascinating
facts you didn’t know about her.

Dion met her husband
when she was 12

At 12 years of age,
Celine Dion wrote a song “Ce n’etait qu’un reve,” and recorded it on tape. Her
mother sent it to the well-known Canadian music producer Rene Angelil who later
became her husband. When Angelil met her for the first time he knew he had to
sign her. Dion first openly expressed her love for her longtime manager in 1993
in the liner notes of her album The Colour Of My Love. The relationship got
some public opinion as they had an age difference of 26 years but later were
offered support by their fans. They began their romantic relationship in 1987
when Dion was 19 years and got engaged in 1991.Angelil and Dion got married on
Dec.17, 1994.

Very much supportive in
charity work

Dion has been active in
supporting a variety of charitable foundations. She launched the Celine Dion
Foundation to bring awareness of cystic fibrosis in 1999. This foundation was
special to her as she founded it after losing her niece Karine in her arms from
the disease. She also led a fundraiser for the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami which
raised more than $1 million.

Celine Dion is a doctor

This is after she
received an honorary doctorate in music from the University Laval in Quebec
City in which is the oldest institution for higher learning in Canada in 2009.

Immortalized with a star
on the Hollywood book of fame

This was in 2004 in
addition to previously receiving a star on the Canadas walk of fame.

Has two distinguished
Canadian civilian honors

In 2008, Dion became an
officer of the Order of Canada and Officer of the National Order of Quebec.
Also in 2013, she was named to the highest rank of the Order of Canada.

She performed for the
pope at 16

When Dion was 16 years
old she performed Une Colombe before 60,000 people at Montreal`s stadium in
respect of Pope John Paul’s II`s visit to Canada. The song was from her album
Melanie and became a French-language hit winning two Felix Awards for
bestselling single and pop song of the year.

Declined a Felix Award

Dion`s album Unison won
many awards including one in the home province that she declined. The Felix
Awards are named after Quebecoise songwriter Felix Leclerc and Dion has won
more than any other recording artist but in 1990 she created controversy when
she declined an award for Anglophone artist of the year. She declined by saying
“I am not an Anglophone artist and the public understands that everywhere I go
in the world, I say that I`m proud to be Quebecoise.”
