KITUI, Kenya – Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County is scheduled to be completed in time for the national celebration of Mashujaa Day on October 20, 2025.

On Tuesday, September 2, 2025, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo shared a status report of the modern 10,000-seater sports facility.

“The construction of the stadium commenced in June 2025 and is steadily progressing,” the PS said.

According to PS Omollo, the terraces, VIP lounge, internal access roads, pedestrian walkways, and VIP roofing have already been completed.

“Grass weeding, grading and levelling are currently underway. The roofing of the terraces remains the final major work before completion,” the PS further said.

While taking on his official X account (formerly Twitter), PS Omollo reiterated that the project reaffirms the government’s continued investment in sports infrastructure.

“This comes on the heels of Kenya’s successful co-hosting of the CHAN 2024 finals and in line with preparations for the upcoming AFCON 2027, which Kenya will also co-host,” he said.

What is the significance of the Ithookwe Stadium

The stadium, PS Omollo disclosed, has already been designated as the official venue for this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations in October, cementing its place as a national landmark.

“Beyond sports, Ithookwe Stadium is already creating jobs during its construction phase, while its completion will open new opportunities in sports tourism, hospitality and trade, thereby boosting the regional economy and revenue streams,” he explained.

In 2024, Kwale County hosted the Mashujaa Day festivities at the Kwale Stadium in Matuga Sub-County.

Kenya celebrates Mashujaa Day, also known as Heroes Day, on October 20 each year as a
national holiday.

Why do Kenyans celebrate Mashujaa Day

It pays tribute to and acknowledges the accomplishments of those who made a substantial impact on Kenyan society in various sectors and in the nation’s fight for independence.

The day honours heroes from the past and present who have made significant contributions to politics, sports, social justice, and other fields.

Typical celebration activities include parades, cultural events, and speeches by dignitaries discussing the country’s history and core principles.

The 10,000-seater stadium, which had initially been there, underwent a serious facelift ahead of the celebrations.
