NAIROBI, Kenya – The impeachment of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja began on high note on Sunday, August 31, 2025 after Members of the County Assembly started gathering signatures to remove him from office.
Over 90 MCAs decided to start the ouster procedure at a special meeting convened on August 26, 2025.
“Sunday 31 August 2025, close to 70 signatures have been collected in a members’ initiated process to impeach Nairobi Governor, Johnson Arthur Sakaja,” said Kileleshwa ward MCA Robert Alai.
The county assembly has 123 members after the death of Joel Munuve, MCA Kariobangi North Ward.
The meeting was held at a private location in Nairobi where the impeachment resolution is still being draughted, according to Nairobi South MCA Waithera Chege.
“We have resolved to send governor Sakaja home over broken promises, we are in a break, but the next thing is to request the speaker to call for special sitting from next week,” Waithera said.
For the first time, the MCAs who support the UDA and ODM have banded together to demand Sakaja’s dismissal.
The death of Munuve left the Nairobi County Assembly with 123 members.
Why the Nairobi MCAs want Governor Sakaja out of office
The MCAs accused Sakaja of being disconnected from the issues that city dwellers face during their special meeting last week. They said that in the three years after the governor assumed office, no real initiatives had been undertaken.
Waithera Chege, the deputy minority leader, stated during the meeting that the governor’s failure to distribute bursaries and the Ward Development Fund is one of the main problems.
“We have put projects on hold because of this, and the locals have been enquiring,” the Nairobi South MCA added.
“The members also feel the governor is totally out of touch with the ground and MCAs. There is a communication problem between the Executive and the Assembly and he has not come out on the issue of broad-based government because three quarters of members who call him are unable to reach him,” she continued.
According to her, Sakaja has not provided any direction on several matters that are meant to be addressed by the intergovernmental laws.
They claimed that measures and motions approved by the assembly had not been put into effect.
Who is the latest county governor to survive impeachment
This new development comes barely a week after Dr. Eric Mutai once again survived attempts to remove him from office as Kericho Governor after the Senate rejected the impeachment proceedings at the County Assembly on account that the two thirds majority was not achieved.
After three days of deliberations in the House, the question that confronted Senators was on the voting at the County Assembly and whether two thirds majority was achieved during the voting process.
So contentious was the issue of the process of voting and who actually voted that the House failed to delve into substantive matters leading to the impeachment at the County Assembly.
The MCAs had filed three charges against the Governor: Violations of the Constitution and other laws, abuse of office and gross misconduct.

But the question as to whether voting took place and the number of MCAs who voted lingered. The Governor called nearly 20 witnesses, including 18 MCAs, including an IT expert to defend him.
The County Assembly summoned 6 witnesses while the Senate resorted to an independent expert from the ICT Authority.
However, none of these expert witnesses cleared the doubts on who actually voted and whether the threshold was achieved.
Meanwhile, Alai disclosed that the Nairobi County Assembly MCAs will convene today, Monday, September 1, 2025 at 10amat the County Assembly to finalise collecting 100+ signatures in a campaign dubbed, “100 Signatures Strong” aimed at ousting the embattled city county boss.
