MOMBASA, Kenya – Kenya Business Registration Board Chairperson Hamisi Mwaguya has urged the Mombasa County Government to regulate construction near the ocean, citing encroachment of beach land.

Mwaguya said unscrupulous developers were threatening the coastal ecosystem by erecting illegal structures along the shoreline.
He spoke on Saturday at Manyani Beach, Junda, during a tree-planting exercise that brought together hundreds of residents and Costa Rica’s Ambassador to Kenya, Veronica Garcia.
“We are seeing encroachment of beach land by unscrupulous business people. These activities are threatening our environment and must be stopped,” Mwaguya said during the event attended by News9.africa.
Mwaguya, who is eyeing the Mombasa senatorial seat, said both the national and county governments should enforce environmental regulations to protect the coastline.
He urged residents to participate in conservation efforts, warning that degradation of the marine ecosystem would hurt coastal communities that depend on natural resources.
The exercise was aimed at restoring the degraded Manyani Beach shoreline.
Concerns have been growing over environmental degradation along the coastline, with activists calling for strict enforcement of the 60-metre riparian reserve from the high-water mark.
