KISUMU, Kenya – Former Interior and National Coordination Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has held talks with Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, a day after he met his Trans Nzoia counterpart George Natembeya.
Matiang’i has officially declared his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election. As of late 2025, Matiang’i is positioning himself as a primary alternative to the current administration, recently assuming a leadership role within the Jubilee Party and aligning with the “United Opposition”.

“Today, I held a brotherly conversation with His Excellency the Governor of Kisumu County, Prof. @AnyangNyongo, at his office. We were joined by the United Opposition Spokesperson @DrMukhisaKituyi, Kitutu Masaba MP Hon. Clive Gisairo, and former Kisii County Women Representative Hon. Janet Ong’era,” Matiang’i posted on X (formerly Twitter) after the meeting.
The former powerful CS disclosed that he “thoroughly enjoyed Prof. @AnyangNyongo’s brilliance, strategic depth, and crystal-clear perspective on the future of our country’s leadership.”
“Clearly, with leaders of his calibre contributing to nation building, the future of our nation can only be bright,” added Matiang’i.
Why is Fred Matiang’i eyeing the country’s top seat
On Wednesday, December 17, 2025, Matiang’i held consultations with Governor Natembeya in his Kitale office in a move seen by many as a way of reaching out to his like-minded opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 polls.
“We reaffirmed our friendship and strong working relationship within the United Opposition as we continue to pursue our vision to restore good leadership and fix the problems facing our country,” disclosed Matiang’i.
The former CS further revealed that they also reflected on the challenges facing the Kenya Kwanza regime and emphasised the need for accountable leadership and effective management of the country.
“We further reiterated the need to work together as Opposition leaders to save our country from the economic mess it currently faces. We were joined by various leaders from the Trans Nzoia County government, the County Assembly, and also from across the political divide,” said Matiang’i.
Fred Matiang’i’s road to the 2027 General Election
In May 2025, Matiang’i officially declared his 2027 presidential bid, stating he has the experience to “fix the country”.
Matiang’i currently serves as the Deputy Party Leader of the Jubilee Party. He has been endorsed as the party’s preferred flagbearer for 2027.
Often referred to as “Mr. Fix It” for his track record of implementing major reforms across several dockets, Matiang’i is actively consulting with key opposition figures, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, to build a formidable coalition against President William Ruto.
Recently, Matiang’i conducted a high-profile “homecoming” tour in the Gusii region and held consultative meetings with youth in Nairobi to discuss governance and national development.
