An officer from the General Service Unit (GSU) deployed in Kisii has been arrested for snatching a smartphone from a Kisii University student and involvement in robbing a supermarket.
Police Constable Edgar Opollo was attacked by an angry mob after he violently robbed the student on February 3 and was rescued by Kisii Central police who were on patrol.
Upon inspection, the phone was found on the officer who was taken to the police station.
The GSU officer was involved in another criminal activity
DCI detectives in Kisii have been pursuing an armed gang of three who on January 2 robbed Sh40,000 from PEPS Mini Supermarket located at Corner Mbaya.
CCTV cameras captured the robbery showing three robbers who had partly covered their faces, two were armed, one with an AK47 and the other with a pistol. The rifle bearer had police fatigues on, but it was not clear if he was a police officer.
Following Opollo’s arrest, an identification parade was conducted and the supermarket owner identified him as one of the robbers at the premises.
Opollo will be interrogated by the authorities and arraigned for robbery with violence after he recovers from the blows handed to him by the angry mob.
