Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) is struggling to cope with an unprecedented surge in patient numbers following the ongoing industrial action by health workers in Nairobi and Kiambu counties.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, KNH revealed that the industrial dispute has left many county hospitals partially or completely shut, forcing patients to seek medical attention at the national referral facility. The influx has placed immense strain on the hospital’s resources, particularly in emergency and maternity services.
According to the Acting Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Richard Lesiyampe, the Maternity Department has been the most affected, with the Labour Ward and Newborn Unit now operating at more than double their normal capacity.
“Sadly, some of the mothers and babies are arriving too late, and a few have had poor health outcomes despite the best efforts of our dedicated medical teams,” Dr. Lesiyampe said.
He added that the increased patient load has stretched essential services such as operating theatres, the blood bank, and diagnostic units to their limits. Despite the challenges, KNH medical teams are working around the clock to provide care to all patients who seek help.
“KNH remains committed to caring for all who come through our doors and we continue to do everything possible to save lives under these difficult circumstances,” the statement read.

The hospital has appealed to both county authorities and striking health workers to reach an amicable resolution to the crisis, emphasizing that restoring normal operations in local facilities will reduce pressure on KNH and allow patients to access care closer to their homes.
The ongoing strike, which has disrupted operations in public hospitals across Nairobi and Kiambu, has raised concerns over patient safety and the capacity of referral hospitals to manage the overflow.
KNH reiterated its call for urgent dialogue to end the industrial action, noting that timely resolution is crucial to prevent further loss of life and to safeguard the delivery of quality health services nationwide.
