NAIROBI, Kenya – Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi appears to have received a political lifeline after landing a plum position in the newly formed United Opposition.
On Tuesday, September 3, 2025, Dr. Mukhisa was appointed to the opposition outfit’s secretariat, serving as its spokesman and head of the Secretariat.

The announcement was made by Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua and confirmed by other opposition leaders.
“The United Opposition has appointed Hon. Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi as their spokesperson and the Head of the Opposition Secretariat,” Gachagua posted on his official X account (formerly Twitter).
News Nine understands that the United Opposition in Kenya includes leaders such as Mukhisa, Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Mithika Linturi, Fred Matiang’i, Eugene Wamalwa, George Natembeya, and Justin Muturi, among others.
Dr. Mukhisa’s appointment came during a strategy meeting hosted by Kalonzo in what was described as a “unity bid” ahead of he political outfit’s planned Monday rally in Kisii County.
According to insiders, the meeting was meant to project an image of a one united group and remove any doubt that the group is split following heightened individual campaigns.
Who did Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi support in the 2022 General Election
Dr. Mukhisa had expressed interest in running for president in 2022, but ultimately shelved his ambitions.
He decided to collaborate with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, Raila Odinga, instead.
Before this, he stepped down from his role as secretary-general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
Nine News knows that already, Gachagua has declared that he has a strategy to defeat President William Ruto in the next polls and has vowed to continue exposing the president’s alleged deception, which he claims will ensure Kenyans reject him at the ballot.
“Politics is a game of mathematics. Period. Let no one lie to you about this. The mathematics of politics is addition and not subtraction. This is why the president is currently in a fix because instead of doing mathematics of plus, he is doing minus,” said Gachagua.
Why Gachagua thinks President Ruto has lost the Mt. Kenya region
Gachagua maintains that the head of state has lost a majority of the votes he garnered through the August 9, 2022, presidential polls.
“In Mt. Kenya, he has lost five million votes. The 2 million from Ukambani is also gone. The president and his people are doing politics of subtraction while we are busy doing addition,” added Gachagua.
To put the icing on the cake, Gachagua indicated that to make sure President Ruto loses in the forthcoming elections, there is a need for the Mt. Kenya region to unite with Ukambani as a single voting bloc.
“I don’t want to go alone and leave Kalonzo alone; once we are united, this election coming in 2027, Mt Kenya and Ukambani will win it in Round One, and I want to assure you that there will be no runoff,” explained Gachagua.
The former DP, fresh from his U.S. tour, has sustained his onslaught against President Ruto, claiming that the president, his political ally turned enemy, will be a one-term president regardless of the political alliances he forms in the remaining years to 2027.
