Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a stern warning to political leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, cautioning them against interfering with the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarter-final match between Harambee Stars and Madagascar scheduled for Friday at Kasarani Stadium.

Speaking in Murang’a on Tuesday, August 19, Murkomen said the government has reinforced security measures to ensure the match proceeds without disruptions.

He further praised the National Police Service for their efforts during last Sunday’s games and assured Kenyans that similar arrangements were in place for the quarter-finals.

“Any interference from political actors, whether within or outside the country, will not be tolerated. We want peace to prevail in our nation,” Murkomen stated.

He added that the Ministry of Interior was working closely with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to implement necessary security protocols, urging Kenyans to continue supporting the national team and abide by stadium rules.

Meanwhile, Gachagua is expected to return from his United States trip on Thursday, August 21.

According to Democratic for Citizens Party (DCP) deputy leader Cleophas Malala, thousands of supporters will welcome him at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) before leading a “peaceful procession” to Kamukunji grounds for a rally.

Malala further warned the government against arresting Gachagua upon arrival, arguing that such a move could trigger protests and overshadow the CHAN tournament.

“If you apprehend Rigathi Gachagua the following day, you will see demonstrations. I am sure that if that happens, Kenyans will not be able to enjoy the Harambee Stars’ quarter-final match,” Malala said.

The developments come as excitement builds for the Harambee Stars’ crucial clash against Madagascar, with fans and authorities keen to ensure the tournament runs smoothly.
