Nairobi, Kenya- As Nairobi residents continue to deal with limited water supply, the Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company has come out to explain the situation despite the ongoing heavy rains in the country.
In a press release, the company explained, “We have to first treat the water from the dams before it gets to our taps. Our treatment plants have a maximum production capacity of 525.6 million litres per day against a demand of 870 million litres.”
The statement continued to say, “Our water supply to the city is therefore limited to the installed production capacity. This means that even when we have our dams overflowing, the water supply will remain constant- we cannot go beyond the installed production capacity.”
The company also said it has to continue rationing the water to enable each customer to receive water at least once a week.
To address the deficit in water supply in the county, the company said the Northern Collector Tunnel Phase I Water Project will be commissioned in March 2024 and is expected to deliver additional 140 million litres to the city per day.
On the other hand, Karemenu Water Dam Project is in the final stages of completion and is supposed to provide 23 million litres of water per day to Nairobi by the end of 2023.
Nairobi residents have been facing water rationing for months with others being forced to buy the commodity from vendors to manage the shortage.
