The National Environmental Management Authority, NEMA, has
launched an inspection to the suspected effluent discharge at the Nairobi
National Park.

In a media invite sent to news rooms, NEMA Chief Corporate
Communication Manager Evans Nyabuto said the inspection will kick off today
(Friday) morning.

The 100-day rabid result initiative on the effluent
discharge licensing regime will bring all facilities country-wide into compliance.

It will also crack down on illegal discharge into the
sewers, rivers and the entire environment.

The authority is mandated to supervise and co-ordinate all
matters related to the environment and implement polies governing them.

This comes barely a week after NEMA shut down 25 factories
accused of discharging effluent into Nairobi River on Wednesday

NEMA Director-General Geoffrey Wahungu confirmed the closure
of the factories, saying that they illegally discharged waste into the river.

Mr Wahungu added that the factories did not meet the
authority’s standards and therefore could not be allowed to continue operating.

Several efforts by the authority are underway to clean up
the environment.
