A Nairobi student who wrote to Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja seeking help after scoring 400 marks in KCPE has received financial support for her education.

Kimberly Nkatha scored 408 marks in KCPE and is set to join Mary Hill Girls’ School following Sakaja’s intervention.

A photo of Nkatha holding a placard asking for well-wishers including Governor Sakaja and former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko for help to finance her secondary education made rounds on social media, getting the attention of the governor.

Nkatha will now join the national school with her Form 1-4 fees and shopping is taken care of by Sakaja’s initiative.

The governor  offered Nkatha’s single mother a job saying,

“Kimberly will be part of the 1,000 bright but needy students joining Form 1 who will benefit from this year’s Governor’s Scholarship at the end of the week. This covers their full Form 1-4 education.”

This comes as vulnerable families in the country struggle to get funding for their children to join secondary schools as learning resumes on January 15.

CDF funds are yet to reach constituencies with parents urging the government to take necessary steps to ensure needy learners get finances to enable them to join secondary school.

KCPE and KCSE results under CS Ezekiel Machogu

Education CS Ezekiel Machogu said KCPE students who attained 400 marks and above have been placed in national and extra county schools.

While releasing the 2023 KCPE examination results, Machogu disclosed that “8,525 candidates scored between 400 and 500 marks.”

On the other hand, over 1,200 candidates around the country scored a mean grade of A in the recently completed 2023 Kenya Certificate of  Secondary Examination (KCSE) examinations.

Speaking during the release of the national examination results at Moi Girls High School, Eldoret, the Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu said,

“ 1,216 candidates scored A, representing 0.14% of the 903,260 candidates who sat for the exams.”

Out of the 903,260 candidates, 201,133 candidates managed to score C+ and above, qualifying to join universities in the country.

However, Machogu expressed concerns over the 48,174 candidates who scored an E in the examinations, adding that investigations will be conducted into the matter.
