NAIROBI, Kenya – A technical group has been formed to support the collaboration required to promote sports throughout the nation.
President William Ruto has said that the group will include representatives from the commercial sector, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), and the government.
According to the president, the committee would manage league branding, guarantee that talent is effectively utilised to elevate sports in Kenya, and supervise sponsorships of athletes in various competitions.
He emphasised that the government is committed to making the tripartite partnership mutually beneficial, noting that the private sector would not invest where there is no clear value.
“We must make it win-win. If it is not win-win, it is not sustainable,” President Ruto said.
The President said this Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at a breakfast meeting held at State House, Nairobi, that included leaders from the corporate sector, FKF, and the Ministry of Sports.
President Ruto clarified that the technical committee will aid in streamlining the sports industry, which will, in turn, encourage the private sector to fully engage and provide funding and ideas.
He noted that by developing a framework for their successful participation, the chosen team will eliminate the barriers that prevent the commercial sector from being involved in sports.
Why President Ruto believes that the lack of funding is not ailing sports
According to President Ruto, the government is still making conscious investments in sports, such as building stadiums, starting grassroots sports academies, and planning competitions from the ground up.
He noted that to provide local athletes with the exposure they need, the government also purposefully bid to host CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027.
President Ruto asked for bold leadership and a clear plan in the sports sector to build on this momentum, noting that the sector’s problems are not due to a lack of funding but rather to a lack of planning and leadership.
“I don’t think resources are the problem, both in the government and private sector,” he said.
The President noted that private sector contribution to sports had dwindled due to mismanagement and lack of leadership.
What are some of the issues that the government has addressed in sports
He recalled that Kenya has turned a corner from recent sports debacles. In 2022, FKF had been suspended from international football while monies from the Sports Fund were being used for other projects.
These challenges, he said, had since been addressed. Since 2022, the Sports Fund has been dedicated solely to sports development.
On FKF leadership, the head of state expressed confidence in the current office holders.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki added that the future of sports in Kenya is bright.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya affirmed that the government is committed to fostering relations with the private sector to elevate sports in the country.
