BUNGOMA, Kenya – Members of the powerful Ngachi clan in Bungoma County have officially thrown their weight behind veteran journalist Namisi Cheptai to run for the Ndivisi Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) seat in the 2027 General Election, giving him a major political boost.

Cheptai, who worked for more than 15 years as a Western Region reporter for Citizen TV and more than 20 years in mainstream media, is now making the move into elective politics, relying on his extensive background in public-interest journalism and strong grassroots ties.

Representatives from nine extended Ngachi family lineages attended the family gathering led by Jack Ngobilo, which resulted in the endorsement.

The group, which described Cheptai as a disciplined, seasoned, and community-focused leader, unanimously decided to support his campaign.

Speaking during the meeting, Yahya Sifuma said the decision reflected confidence in Cheptai’s long-standing engagement with community issues.

“We have known Namisi for years through his work and interaction with people. He has consistently given voice to the voiceless. We believe he will now do the same from a leadership position,” said Sifuma.

What is the significance of the endorsement

Geofrey Namisi Alis Mkopa, another family representative, said the endorsement symbolised unity and collective responsibility.

“This is a decision by nine families speaking with one voice. We are confident that Namisi represents integrity and a fresh approach to leadership in Ndivisi,” he said.

Ezekiel Masake urged residents to support Cheptai’s bid, citing his exposure and understanding of governance issues.

“He has reported on development challenges for many years. That experience gives him a clear understanding of what needs to be done. Ndivisi will benefit from his leadership,” Masake said.

In his acceptance remarks, Cheptai expressed gratitude to the Ngachi clan and pledged to serve the ward with commitment and accountability.

“I am humbled by this endorsement from my family. I accept it with great responsibility and a clear understanding that leadership is about service to the people,” he said.

He added:

“My priority will be to ensure that development reaches every village in Ndivisi fairly and transparently. I will walk with the people every step of the way.”

Cheptai outlined key priorities, including improved road networks, access to clean water, better healthcare services, rural electrification, strengthened security, and expanded bursary support for vulnerable students.

His entry into politics has begun to reshape the local political landscape, with early grassroots engagements already underway across Ndivisi villages as he seeks to build a strong support base ahead of 2027.

Political observers say his media background and growing clan backing could position him as a formidable contender in what is expected to be a closely contested race for the ward seat.
