60 students have been injured in St. Bridget Nangwe Secondary School in Kabuchai Constituency in Bungoma County after lighting hit their school.

According to the School Principal Fransisca Munyasia, students were in class for the normal preps when rain started falling heavily and thereafter lightning struck the school injuring 60 students.

“60 students were affected by the tragedy that befell the school on Sunday March 3 at 7 p.m. those who were injured were quickly taken to Khalaba Medical Centre in Bungoma Town. Ten of them are admitted and the medical report shows that they are in stable condition,’ she said.

A spot check at Khalaba Medical Centre established that several students were nursing injuries that resulted from the turmoil that was caused by the lightning. A medical officer in charge told the press that the victims are stable and they are doing their best to save the students. She added that the students would soon be out of hospital.

The area MCA Eric Wapang’ana promised that he is working together with the relevant authorities to ensure that lightning arrestors are installed in the region, noting that the area is susceptible to such incidences. He also urged the residents to be vigilant and always be careful.

“We are trying to erect lighting arrestors in the school. We also need to be cautious of such bad happenings and take necessary preventive measures,” said the MCA.
