Veteran Kenyan radio broadcaster Charles Omuga Kabisae has passed away after a long illness.
Kabisae died on August 11, 2025 and his body has been taken to a Nairobi morgue as his family finalizes funeral arrangements.
Renowned for his dignified and eloquent delivery of Matangazo Maalum na ya Vifo (special and death announcements) on radio, Kabisae’s voice became instantly recognizable to audiences across the country. His unique style, deep tone and professionalism earned him a loyal following over decades on air.
Kabisae began his career at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation’s (KBC) Dholuo Service in Kisumu before moving to the Kiswahili Service in the early 1990s. The transition broadened his audience and cemented his status as one of Kenya’s most respected radio personalities.
A native of Nyamasaria in Kisumu County, Kabisae hailed from a region known for producing exceptional broadcasters, among them the late Evans Odhiambo Sino, Caleb Odhiambo Akumu and Omollo Abisa.
One of the most memorable moments in Kabisae’s early career came during his internship. He was assigned to announce the death of an individual only for news to emerge hours later that the person was still alive. The affected family demanded a public retraction. When Kabisae returned to air to correct the announcement, his composure and professionalism impressed KBC’s senior management, setting the tone for his illustrious career.
Kabisae rose to prominence during a period when radio was the country’s primary news source, long before the smartphone era. His phenomenal voice and credible delivery made him a trusted figure for many listeners seeking reliable information.
Throughout his career, he worked alongside some of Kenya’s legendary broadcasters, including the late Leonard Mambo Mbotela, who passed away on February 5, 2025.
Tributes have begun pouring in from colleagues, media personalities and listeners, remembering Kabisae not just for his voice but for the dignity, integrity and warmth he brought to Kenyan radio.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
