Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has said that utility
service providers should spare Kenyans the burden of paying bills, during this
tough economic times.
Addressing the public at Afia House Nairobi, CS Kagwe urged
Kenya power and water companies to extend the services, should they see delays
in payment this month.
“If the public does not pay electricity or water bills this
months, do not disconnect them. Understand that this are difficult times and we
need these services to aid us in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic,” said
Kagwe.
The CS echoes part of UNCTAD Secretary General Dr. Mukhisa
Kituyi’s advice to the government on utility bills.
Speaking to a local television on Tuesday night, Dr. Kituyi
urged the government to caution Kenyans against these utility bills, to protect
them from the risk of contracting the contagious disease.
Mr. Kagwe added that the government is in talks with the
service providers, especially water companies, through the respective
ministries, to ensure steady supply.
He warned Kenyans to be prepared for stiffer measures to be
undertaken by the government in the fight against the virus.
“Prepare for stiffer measures in the coming days. A lock
down is not the right measure to undertake –because if you lock about 10 people
in one place, yet one of them is infected what will we be doing… –but if we don’t
follow the measures put in place, it will be the only option,” added the CS.
The number of Coronavirus cases in the country have grown to
81, after 22 tested positive out of the 300 people tested in the last 24 hours.
“This number should put us on high alert, if 81 are affected
possibilities are high that the person next to you is infected, keep distance
and stay safe,” warned CS Kagwe.
