Kenya’s Harambee Stars delivered a famous win over Morocco in the CHAN 2024 tournament, capping off a day of national anticipation and celebrity-fuelled motivation.
The build-up to the 3 pm Group A clash at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, was electric. From the morning, fans in Nairobi and across the country donned red, green and black jerseys, while social media buzzed with messages of support. Among the most eye-catching came from singer Bahati and his wife, influencer Diana Marua.
In a bold gesture, the couple pledged KSh 1 million to the team if they triumphed over Morocco, along with an extra KSh 200,000 for standout midfielder Austine Odhiambo. Their video announcement, filmed outside their luxury mansion and flanked by high-end cars, went viral within hours.
“We are bringing this money to the stadium. If Harambee Stars beat Morocco, they will get it right after the match,” Bahati declared.
When the whistle blew, Morocco started strong, controlling possession and forcing goalkeeper Byrne Omondi into early saves. But Kenya struck against the run of play in the 42nd minute — Tusker FC forward Ryan Ogam slotting home a low shot that sent the home crowd into raptures.
The match turned tense just before halftime when defender Chrispine Erambo received a straight red card after a VAR review. Down to 10 men, Harambee Stars were forced to defend for their lives. Omondi’s heroics between the posts, combined with disciplined defending, saw Kenya hold on for a 1-0 win.
The result secured Kenya’s place in the knockout stages with one match to spare. It also unlocked more financial incentives on top of Bahati and Diana’s pledge, President William Ruto’s win bonuses mean each player has now earned KSh 2.5 million so far in the tournament.
The stadium erupted in celebration as the players, staff and thousands of fans basked in the moment. For Kenya, it was not just a win, but a statement.
Final Score:
🇰🇪 Kenya 1 – 0 Morocco 🇲🇦
Goal: Ryan Ogam (42’)
