Comedian and activist Eric Omondi turned the CHAN 2024 match day atmosphere into an even more memorable experience for Harambee Stars fans by handing out free smokies outside Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
The highly anticipated Group A fixture between Kenya and Morocco drew thousands of supporters draped in national colours. Hours before the 3 pm kickoff, Eric was spotted mingling with fans near the stadium gates, distributing hundreds of smokies from a mobile cart.
Videos and photos shared on his Instagram page show him joking with supporters, posing for selfies and encouraging them to back the national team loudly. In his caption, Eric praised the Harambee Stars for their fighting spirit and urged Kenyans to “fill the stands and fill the noise.”
“Today is about love for our country and for our boys. Eat, cheer and let’s win this together!” he said in one of the Instagram clips, which quickly went viral.
The event wasn’t just about snacks; it became a rallying point for fan energy ahead of the game. Supporters, many of whom arrived hours early, welcomed the gesture as a sign of solidarity.
The feel-good pre-match atmosphere seemed to set the tone for what followed on the pitch: Harambee Stars went on to stun Morocco 1-0, thanks to a first-half goal by Ryan Ogam and heroic defending after Chrispine Erambo’s red card.
Omondi later returned to Instagram to congratulate the team, praising their resilience and hinting he might “level up the celebrations” if Kenya progresses to the semi-finals.
