Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza has died aged 55.
President Nkurunziza is said to have succumbed from a
cardiac arrest at died at Karusi hospital.
A government statement says that he was admitted to hospital
on Saturday after feeling unwell.
Reports show that his condition had improved but on Monday,
he exhibited a cardiac arrest and efforts to revive went unsuccessful.
The president on Saturday, attended a volleyball match after
which he fall ill and was taken to hospital.
The government has announced a period of national mourning
for seven days from Tuesday, with flags raised and flown at half-mast.
Nkurunziza ascended to power in 2005, and was due to be
replaced in August, after 15 years of his reign.
His political ally Evariste Ndayishimiye, was declared
earlier this month as the winner of May 20 presidential election.
He run for a third term in 2015, a move that was condemned
by the opposition as unconstitutional, sparking mass unrest in the country.
Nkurunziza’s deaths comes ten days after his wife Denise was
flown to Nairobi and admitted at the Aga Khan Hospital for suspected
coronavirus infections.
The first Lady is said to have been airlifted to Nairobi by
Amref Health Africa.
