The 2020 presidential elections campaigns in the US seems to
be taking another course, even as officials warn of interference from Vladimir
Putin administration.
As CNN politics reports, a security official from the
intelligence community delivered a briefing to lawmakers last week warning them
that the intelligence community believes Russia is already taking steps to
interfere in the 2020 election.
According to the brief, the main goal of meddling is to help
President Donald Trump win in the November Election.
A briefing, led by election security official Shelby Pierson
last week, addressed the overall picture of Russia’s efforts, including
hacking, weaponizing social media and attacks on election infrastructure.
The briefs said Russia does not only favor Trump, but also
set to raise questions about the integrity of the US elections process.
Russia was also accused by the US intelligence community for
meddling in the 2016 election, with an aimed at boosting Trump’s candidacy and
hurting his opponent.
The prospect of interference in 2020 will further test US
defenses against foreign meddling, which Trump has repeatedly downplayed as he
has dismissed any suggestion that Kremlin influence played a role in his
election, writes CNN.
Trump escaped an impeachment plot by Democrats, when the
senate acquitted him barely a month ago.
Democrats were not satisfied by the senate ruling, citing
republican majority in the senate as a trick used by President Trump to sabotage
his impeachment from office.
They promised to work for the people of America, whose voice
will speak come November elections.
However, Trump seems set to win the election –now with the
emergent intelligence info on Russia interference.
