Parents in Moiben, Uasin Gishu County, have ousted the Mafuta Secondary School Principal, following poor performance in the 2023 Kenya Certificate for Secondary Education (KCSE).
The incident that happened on Thursday, January 11, saw enraged parents blockading the gates of Mafuta Secondary School demanding the removal of Chrispinus Mukenya, the Principal.
The parents claimed the school has been recording poor results since Mukenya was tenured in the school closely 7 years ago.
KCSE 2023 results
Based on last year’s KCSE results, the top student in the school scored a D+ followed by a D -, while the rest of the candidates (20) scored Grade E.
“We are here as parents of Mafuta Secondary School. What you can see from the results is devastating. We have like 20 Es. The first boy has a D+. If this Principal is here to serve, why are we having this kind of results,” cried out Mike Bett, one of the parents protesting the results.
School Board Chair, Muhammad Abdi, accused Chrispinus Mukenya of selling the school property without the Board’s involvement.
“What is the mean grade of 0.003,? Since this teacher was brought here, seven years the children have fallen. He is taking and selling school property without the approval of the board,” said Abdi.
While compelling the Principal in a forceful manner from school, the angry parents said that Mukenya has been quite autocratic, accusing him of school absenteeism and not engaging the board and the school parents on necessary school matters.
The highest mean grade the school has ever gotten is 2.0 in the last 7 years something which raised eyebrows among parents.
“The paper was given to him as Principal before even he graduated, he has hurt our children, we want him out today,” Abdi added
Jennifer Keter who is also another parent showed a pointing figure on the Principal, saying he is very wild, lucking good humour and Courtesy.
However, the Principal dismissed the claims, saying parents are also major players in schools’ poor performance.
“The mean grade was 1.0. if you are not supported, there is no way you can produce. If you are frog marched the way you are seeing now, there is no way,” argued Mukenya.
KCSE 2023 performance
Meanwhile, over 1,200 candidates around the country scored a mean grade of A in the recently completed KCSE examinations.
Speaking during the release of the national examination results at Moi Girls High School, Eldoret, the Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu said the number was 0.14% of the 903,260 candidates who sat for the exams.
Out of the 903,260 candidates, 201,133 candidates managed to score C+ and above, qualifying to join universities in the country. 96,235 are female and 104,898 are male.
