One of the Kenyan doctors sent to Cuba for training
committed suicide while in the foreign country. Dr.Hamisi Ali Juma died on Sunday
under unclear circumstances.
Juma was among 50kenyan doctors sponsored by the government to
study Family Medicine in Cuba under an MOU between Kenya and Cuba.
His family revealed that Juma had been constantly complaining
of the difficult working conditions in Cuba. He even sent a formal request to return
home but no action was taken.
It is said that the doctors are living in horrible conditions
sharing small rooms with no ventilation. They communicated their concerns to
the Ministry of Health all in vain.
The ministry’s statement released on Monday read, “The
circumstances resulting in the death are not clear yet, as investigations by
the Cuban authorities are ongoing.”
It added, “…We urge fellow Kenyans especially his fellow
student colleagues in Cuba to be sensitive to the grieving family and refrain from
discussing the case on the social or regular media.”
Kenyans are already conveying mixed reactions to the news
regardless of the statement signed by Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki
and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.
