After Kenyans ridiculed the first lion statue that the Nairobi Country Government mounted at University Way- Uhuru Highway Roundabout saying it was ugly, it has been replaced with another one that is much more appealing.
In his statement on Facebook regarding the change of statue,
Nairobi Governor said the first one was artistic work in progress adding
that the sculpture was to help the artists get the measurements for the final
beautiful piece.
He said, “The mounting and finishing of such a statue had to
be taken through different artistic steps towards the final artwork by our
local artists from Nairobi.”
“The work has to be done in meticulous stages starting with
a “dummy” to facilitate the taking of measurements and planning the
installation work,” he added.
Sonko reiterated that the statue was part of major efforts
to “facelift Nairobi City Landscape”. He continued to say that there is more to
do about beautifying the city including planting green ground cover, tree
seedlings, and flowers.
Regarding the cost of the beautification programmes, the Governor
said, “The good news is that this lion statue and some of the beautification
programmes are my personal initiatives and no public funds are being spent on
them apart from paying the casuals who are maintaining the grass and flowers.”
