Passengers stranded at JKIA as CS Macharia says the strike is illegal

Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia has said that the workers strike that paralysed airport operation at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport was illegal and the matter has been sorted.

Speaking on Wednesday, the CS said KAA has some contigency plans towards the issue.

“The strike was declared illegal but unfortunately they went ahead and mobilized a very small group of people of not more than 30 comprised of the screeners. That matter has now been sorted out because KAA has some contingency plans ,” said Mr. Macharia.

Hundreds of passengers have been stranded since morning for more than 6 hours at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, leading to a predicament in one of the busiest airports after aviation workers downed their tools due to management row and the planned merger between Kenya Airports Authority and Kenya Airways.

Workers who are on strike are the members of Kenya Aviation of Workers Union (KAWU) include the cabin crew, security, air traffic controllers and aircraft maintenance service providers.

The striking workers say the planned handover management to Kenya Airways will make most of them lose their jobs and wants the plans to be thrown away.

KAA on the other hand issued a statement on tweeter stating that the planned strike whose notice was issued on February 27 by KAWU workers has been suspended since the Employment and Labour relations issued an order of ban on March 5.

KQ is planning to enter into an agreement with the Kenya Airports Authority to operate and maintain the Airport, something that brings a lot of rhetoric questions to the employees of the airport.

Kenya Airways has advised passengers who were set to fly from 11 a.m on March 5 to suspend the journey until when communicated to as no operations would be taking place.

Only those flying to Mumbai, Amsterdam and London were allowed to check in since they are the only flights not affected by the strike.
