NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto has led Kenyans in celebrating David Munyua after winning the Paddy Power World Darts Championship in London.
Munyua, who picked up darts just three years ago, won African qualifiers and made his first-ever trip outside Africa. He stormed back from 2 sets down to stun seeded star Mike De Decker 3-2.

“Congratulations on your remarkable victory in round one at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship. By defeating Belgium’s Mike De Decker, an established champion, with a fearless comeback from two sets down, you delivered one of the most memorable moments in the tournament’s history,” President Ruto wrote on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
In his own words, the head of state went on: “You have also made history for Kenya as the first Kenyan to compete in the PDC World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace in London and announced your arrival on the global darts stage.”
As Munyua advances to the next stage, President Ruto assured him of the country’s support.
“Be assured and know that the nation stands behind you. Bring the trophy home,” added President Ruto.
How Kalonzo Musyoka celebrated David Munyua
In his tribute to the Kenyan star, Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka wrote:
“Dear David Munyua, what a remarkable achievement! Three years ago, you picked up a dart out of curiosity. Today, you’ve stunned the world by defeating the World No. 18 at the PDC World Darts Championship in one of the sport’s greatest upsets.”
Kalonzo observed that Munyua’s journey to Africa’s darts champion is the embodiment of the Kenyan spirit.
“When you were down 2 sets, you didn’t give up – you fought back to win 3-2, not just for yourself, but to show the world that African talent is undeniable. You went there for friendship and sportsmanship, but you’ve given us so much more – hope, pride, and proof that greatness can begin anywhere when we dare to dream. Kenya to the world indeed!” said the former vice president.
Munyua, a 30-year-old from Murang’a, discovered darts three years ago in a local pub and qualified via the African Tour with basic gear.
He clinched the decider with a 135 checkout despite the Belgian’s higher average. Becoming the first African to win a match at the Worlds, Munyua called it a huge moment for Kenya and the continent.
Why does David Munyua support Chelsea FC
Following his victory, Munyua, who is a staunch supporter of English Premier League side Chelsea, disclosed that he had been invited to Stamford Bridge.
“I am very happy about this. I think this is a dream come true for me. I have always wanted to be at Stamford Bridge because I have been supporting Chelsea for the past 10 years. It is amazing. As much as I have been playing and watching football, it would be amazing for me,” explained Munyua.
He attributed his support of Chelsea to the club’s resilience.
“When I was growing up, around 10 years old, Chelsea was not famous, but the energy, just like me now, just came up. It never gave up; it fought during the period of Didier Drogba. I loved the fact that they did it, beating the famous Manchester United and Arsenal, so I felt that was the favourite team to support them,” Munyua said.
Next up, Munyua faces Japan’s Motomu Sakai in the second round.
