African Union envoy on infrastructure developments Raila Odinga has assured residents of Kisumu city that the extension of Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to the city will have a huge impact to its economy.
Addressing the public at Nyakach sub county on Saturday, Raila, who is also the Orange Democratic Movement party leader, said special economic zones will be established in Kisumu, to make the city the hub of East Africa.
He cited the revival of Kisumu inland port which had sprawl following the collapse of the railway transport.
Raila added that he will accompany President Uhuru Kenyatta to China in a bid to solicit the Chinese Government to give Kenya Ksh.368 billion loan, that will see the completion of SGR to Kisumu.
“I will be part of the delegation that will accompany the President to the Asian country next week. The new SGR line will extend from Naivasha to Narok, Bomet, Sondu and finally Kisumu,” said Mr Odinga.
The SGR is expected to extend from Nairobi to Naivasha, Narok, Bomet, Sondu and finally to Kisumu.
According to the Nation, a delegation comprising officials from Treasury, Kenya Railways Corporation, the Transport ministry and the State Law Office, met last week to deliberate on the loan which the president and Raila seek to have the SGR completed.
