Hundreds of passengers are stranded at the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Mombasa terminal after Kenya Railways suspended services.
The corporation announced a temporary suspension of the passenger services for the 10 pm scheduled train.
In a notice shared to the public on Sunday, July 6, Kenya Railways cited technical issues with the train, noting that it prioritises passenger safety.
“We regret to notify members of the public that due to technical issues, the Madaraka Express 10 pm passenger train from Mombasa to Nairobi has been suspended. Kenya Railways prioritises the safety of our passengers,” the notice read in part.
The corporation apologised to passengers for the inconvenience caused. However, it did not provide further communication about the rescheduled time for the train.
The announcements came ahead of the planned Saba Saba protests on Monday, July 7.
Kenyans vowed to move to the streets during the commemoration of the multi-party state day to express their dissatisfaction with the government, following extrajudicial killings.
On Wednesday, June 25, many Kenyans were killed during the Gen Z-led protests aimed at remembering those who lost their lives during the June 25, 2024, protests.
