Kisumu, Kenya – County Government of Kisumu through its governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has extended its profound exhilaration to the National Government, especially to the Ministry of Roads and Transport led by Cabinet Secretary (CS) Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen.
This followed the CS’s affirmation that the plan is underway to extend the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to Kisumu.
In a statement posted on his X account, Governor Nyong’o termed the project as a hub of massive business opportunities, something which would greatly improve economic growth along the Lake Region.
“This is good news because the project will greatly improve travel between Kisumu and Uganda and support both ordinary traveling and business,” he observed.
The governor observed that the extension of the SGR to Kisumu is a speedy elevator of full energy and life to the recently refurbished Kisumu port.
How SGR will help Kisumu and surrounding regions
The Prof. who seriously acknowledged that in deed the extension would solve the transport gap between the Lake Region and the rest of Kenya, is more than optimistic about the National Government’s expedition on the project.
“The needed expansion of transport between the Lake Region and the rest of Kenya has awaited the arrival of the SGR for a long time . We hope all will be done to expedite this project.” Nyong’o commented.
Governor continued in his statement that not only would the extension of the SGR act as an economic growth stimulus but it would immensely unlock Western Tourism Circuit.
“Once completed, the SGR will help spur economic growth in Western Kenya and open up the Western Tourism Circuit which is blessed with many beautiful tourist destinations,” he said.
While lauding CS Kipchumba’s announcement that Ruto’s government wants to do at least 35% of the project by the close of December this year, he also embraced Ex Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government who wanted the SGR to run from Mombasa to Kisumu. Still, the dream faded away with the SGR project only reaching up to Nakuru as a result of insufficient funds.
“Initially, the SGR was to run from Mombasa to Kisumu. However, the project started by former President Uhuru Kenyatta stalled in Nakuru due to inadequate funds, ” Governor Nyong’o added.
Cabinet Secretary of Roads and Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen was quoted over the weekend saying the extension of SGR to Kisumu would commence soon.
