NAIROBI, Kenya—Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has formally been appointed to lead the People Renaissance Movement (PM Party) during its launch and inaugural National Delegates Convention (NDC) at the ASK Dome Jamhuri in Nairobi City County.
In his speech, Amisi said the new party would focus on advancing economic liberation, economic renaissance, and justice for Kenyans.
“Kenya is currently in a total quagmire. The crisis we face today, my people, demands more than cosmetic change. It requires a true economic Renaissance similar to the European and African Renaissance,” said the lawmaker.
Reflecting on June 24, 2024, a day when Kenya was on high alert as youth led the Reject Finance Bill 2024 opposition climaxed, Amisi applauded the youth for coming out in large numbers to fight for what he termed a people’s renaissance.
“This was a renaissance to lower the cost of living, have a productive regime, have a country with competitive energy infrastructure, build an accountable universal healthcare, build democratic institutions to fight corruption, place Kenya in a strategic position to attract direct foreign investment, and build a modern education system that produces graduates who fit in the emerging global job market,” explained the youthful MP.
Opposition leaders push for the removal of President Ruto
A section of political leaders who graced the event, including Martha Karua, Ekuru Aokot, David Maraga, Eugene Wamalwa, Boniface Mwangi, Willis Otieno, Reuben Kigame, and Cleophas Malala, among others, called for the removal of President William Ruto through the 2027 elections.
“I want to use this opportunity to remind Kenyans that Ruto must go home because in 2024 he started abducting and killing our young people. So, from where I sit, I support anyone who says that Ruto must go,” said Malala, the DCP deputy party leader.
Maraga, a former chief justice and the United Green Movement Party leader, said:
“Moments like this matter. When leaders and citizens sit together to reflect honestly on governance, we move closer to the new political direction our people deserve.”
Amisi maintained that a time had come for all Kenyans to rally behind the opposition and send President Ruto home.
“If there is a day you doubted whether William Ruto is going home, today is your answer. The entire opposition is here, and we are going to walk together,” Amisi said.
State-sponsored goons a major national concern
The leaders also accused the government of deploying state-sponsored goons and working with criminal gangs to disrupt political rallies, sabotage public demonstrations, and intimidate critics ahead of the 2027 elections.
“There is the nationalisation of state-sponsored goonism. Goonism is now gaining currency, especially in the conversation around political governance, and that really calls for a major challenge,” explained Aukot.
Aukot, a constitutional expert and politician, claimed there is a dearth of security investigative agencies in the country.
“You can’t tell me today that goons can invade a church and a political party and beat up people. Where is the NIS and the DCI? So, I hope that this issue of goonism, especially state-sponsored, will be addressed as soon as possible,” added Aukot.
What People’s Renaissance Movement stands for
Amisi told the attendees that the movement is anchored on five priority areas, which they are calling “The Big Five.”
“We shall draw inspiration from our animals, the Big Five, to create jobs for our young people, deal with corruption, defend the constitution, manage public debt and revise the economy, and tackle tribal politics once and for all,” explained Amisi.
Earlier, Amisi announced that the new political outfit will produce a presidential candidate in 2027.
In the run-up to the launch, the party also officially inaugurated its Women League, a move it termed as ushering in a new chapter of women’s leadership, inclusion, and empowerment within the party and across the country
