A 26-year-old Moi University student pursuing medicine was
on Tuesday 9 April hacked to death by a middle-aged man.
The male suspect waited for Ivy Wangeci at the entrance of Moi
Teaching and Referral Hospital(MTRH) and attacked her using a knife and axe,
which he had hidden in a sack, causing her injuries that led to her death.
The man pounced on Ivy, slit her throat and hit her on the
head before trying to escape but locals around the area caught up with him. They
beat him mercilessly leaving him in a critical state before the police rescued
him and was admitted at MTRH.
It is believed that the man traveled from Thika to Eldoret
where he planned the brutal attack. Wangeci was in her final year of studies and
was at the hospital for a practical exam.
The incident caused uproar among students with the Vice Chancellor
Isaac Kosgey confirming the incident and urging students to be calm as investigations
were underway.
“It is a very sad day for us. This morning we lost one of us
to an attack by an unknown assailant. We are working with the security forces to
piece together what happened and will update you in time. I want to request all
of you to remain calm,” he stated.
