Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha has directed
universities to stop with immediate effect, the establishment of more satellite
campuses in order to improve on quality learning.
This comes two years following another government directive
to public universities, urging them to focus on strengthening the existing
campuses.
“Some of these campuses are being set up on top of bars
while others have no essential facilities and we will not allow it anymore,”
said the then Education CS Fred Matiang’i.
The Ministry and Commission of University Education (CUE) had
then closed down several satellite campuses, adding that it will continue with
the exercise to ensure better service delivery.
In 2018, about 57 public university campuses were closed for
failing to meet accreditation requirements as higher learning institutions.
CS Magoha in 2019, also maintained that the ministry in
collaboration with CUE will continue to crack down on new universities and
satellite campuses which are not in compliance with the requirements.
“We will rationalize academic programmes and institutions in
Kenya with a view to ensure full potential of the existing universities and
campuses. If possible, existing universities and campuses can be consolidated
for maximum utilisation,” Prof Magoha said.
