International
online taxi operator Uber will note be operating in London should it fail to
appeal a decision to revoke its license by Transport for London (TfL).
TfL said Uber
App recorded a series of safety failures, making not “fit and proper”,
despite having made a number of positive changes to its operations.
This comes
following the expiry of the 2017 extension license on Sunday.
The
regulator said the safety failures put passenger’s safety and security at stake,
following system intrusion by unauthorized drivers.
TfL further
noted that the patterns of failures meant at least 14,000 fraudulent trips were
carried out in London in late 2018 and early 2019.
It also
found that dismissed or suspended drivers signed up fresh Uber accounts, carrying
passengers –which compromised their safety and security.
“While
we recognise Uber has made improvements, it is unacceptable that Uber has
allowed passengers to get into minicabs with drivers who are potentially
unlicensed and uninsured,” said Helen Chapman, Director of Licensing, Regulation
and Charging at TfL.
The BBC
report that about 45,000 drivers work for Uber in London, which is one of its
top five markets globally.
Compared to
the Kenyan market, much could emerge to tell about the company’s application
system.
In July,
Uber drivers in Nairobi downed their tools pushing for higher pay and
standardization of the Application.
