Tough
political temperatures have engulfed the county government of Kirinyaga, with
MCAs threatening to move on with the impeachment motion despite Jubilee party
order.
Kirinyaga
Members of Parliament led by Ndia MP Hon.George Macharia are set to address the
public on Tuesday, over the drama surrounding Waiguru’s impeachment.
The MPs are
also set to touch on the ouster of the majority leader in the Jubilee-led
County Assembly.
The MPs will
also address the orders by the County Commissioner banning Assembly sittings,
following social distancing directives
Jubilee
party demoted James Murang’o from the position of majority leader, after he supported
the impeachment of Governor Anne Waiguru.
Party
Secretary-General Raphael Tuju in a statement said the MCAs conduct violated
Article 13 of the party constitution hence the decision to strip him of the
powers.
Tuju asked
the MCAs to first exhaust all internal party dispute resolution mechanisms
before filing such a motion, warning that this could intrude on the party’s
national agenda.
“Jubilee
party takes great exception in this scheme that is not only meant to derail the
party’s agenda in the county but also nationally,” Mr Tuju said in a letter to
the Majority Leader
The motion
to impeach governor Waiguru was filed in the House on Wednesday with the MCAs
accusing the county chief of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of
office and gross misconduct.
Ms Waiguru is
also accused of failing to deliver the annual state of the county address to
the assembly and buying a vehicle without tendering.
However, the
county boss rejected the claim accusing the MCAs of focusing on petty issues at
a time when the government is battling with coronavirus pandemic.
“It is
unfortunate that at a time when the country, and indeed the whole world, is
focused on dealing with [the] coronavirus health pandemic, some MCAs have opted
to dwell on pettiness and political brinkmanship of filling a frivolous motion
to impeach me without any foundation,” she said in a statement.
