AFCON 2024: Photo showing construction wheelbarrow left off pitch during tournament match causes stir

The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2024 tournament has entered its fifth day since it kicked off on Saturday, January 13.

On Wednesday, January 17, Tanzania represented the East African Community (EAC), playing against Morocco.

AFCON 2023/24 fixtures

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), also an EAC member state, played against Malawi.

On Thursday, January 18, Equatorial Guinea will play against Guinea-Bissau, while Mo Salah’s side Egypt face Ghana.

Funny moments caught on camera during AFCON 2024

As the tournaments continue, there have been hilarious moments caught on camera from both the action and around the field the spectators.

In one of Ivory Coast’s matches, a snapshot of a wheelbarrow used during the construction of the stadium and left off the pitch caught the attention of many social media users.

A screengrab of the video was taken while one of the players was making a corner kick.

How much did Ivory Coast use to plan AFCON 2024?

Meanwhile, News 9 Kenya reported that Ivory Coast  spent close to KSh 159.3 billion for the preparation, part of which they borrowed from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

According to BBC Sports, Cote D’Ivoire heavily invested in roads, hospitals, airports and hotels, through refurbishment and construction of new ones ahead of the tournament.

“This Nations Cup has allowed Ivory Coast to quip itself with sporting and non-sporting infrastructure worthy of a developing country. Organizing the competition has allowed us to improve transport links,” said Francois Amichia, AFCON 2024/23 organising committee chair.

At the same time, four new stadia were brought up whereas the other two went through modernization with 24 training centres also going through the same process.

Idriss Diallo, Ivorian  Football Federation President, said earlier that, the country of Cote D’Ivoire is aiming at becoming the pivot of West Africa where international matches can be hosted and offer a great opportunity to Nations.
