Orange Democratic Party (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, has promised to reward Harambee Stars players with Sh500,000 each following their hard-fought 1–0 win over Zambia in a Group A clash of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.
The tense encounter was settled in the 75th minute when striker Ryan Ogam showed composure inside the box, calmly converting a precise pass from Boniface Muchiri before drilling a low shot past Zambian goalkeeper Charles Kalumba.
The decisive strike ignited wild celebrations among fans and secured Kenya’s place at the top of the group, ensuring a quarter-final showdown against Madagascar on home soil.
Raila, who joined President William Ruto in the team’s changing room after the game, congratulated the players for their determination and for giving Kenyans a reason to celebrate. He commended them for lifting national spirits and uniting the country through their performance.
“I decided to come and say hongera. We were all worried that if you drew or lost, you would have to play outside Nairobi and we want you to keep playing in front of your fans here,” Raila told the jubilant players.
“I will add to what the President has promised. I will give you Sh500,000 each.”
The opposition leader emphasized that the team’s display had gone beyond football, symbolizing resilience and national pride. He thanked the players for “putting their best foot forward” and demonstrating that Kenyan talent can rise to the biggest stages.
His announcement came shortly after President Ruto had pledged Sh2.5 million for each player if they overcame Zambia.

While the Head of State hailed the team for defying expectations in what was widely dubbed the “Group of Death,” Raila’s additional promise drew cheers from the squad and coaching staff, further boosting morale as the team heads into the knockout stages.
Raila’s presence at Kasarani was seen as a gesture of solidarity with the national team, reflecting his long-standing interest in sports and youth development. Over the years, he has been vocal about the need to support local talent and provide opportunities for Kenyan athletes to excel on international platforms.
Kenya’s win over Zambia was more than just three points; it was a statement of intent. The Stars, once written off before the tournament began, now stand just two victories away from a historic place in the CHAN finals. Their success has sparked fresh hope among fans, with many hailing the victory as a turning point for the national team.
As the Harambee Stars prepare to face Madagascar in the quarter-finals, Raila’s promise of financial support has not only rewarded their efforts but also reinforced the sense of national unity that football so often inspires in Kenya.
