Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars, has received a grand reward of KSh 42 million from President William Ruto following their hard-fought 1-0 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in their opening match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The generous token of appreciation was meant to boost morale as the tournament continues.
Speaking after the match, President Ruto commended the players and the technical bench for displaying courage, unity, and commitment, which earned them a deserved win.
He emphasised that the reward was a reflection of national gratitude and a show of confidence in the team’s ability to bring glory to the country.
“You’ve made us proud. This reward is just the beginning, keep pushing and the nation will stand with you all the way,” Ruto said.
The total amount of KSh 42 million was shared among players, coaches and support staff, with each member of the squad receiving a portion based on their contribution and role. The Head of State had promised financial motivation to the team before the tournament and has now delivered on that pledge after their victory.
The match, held at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, saw Kenya edge out DRC with a lone goal from Gor Mahia midfielder Austine Odhiambo. His well-timed strike just before half-time sent the crowd into a frenzy and ultimately secured the vital three points for Kenya.
Odhiambo’s composed finish into the bottom corner highlighted his growing importance in the team and was widely praised by fans and pundits alike. His goal not only won the match but also unlocked the massive cash reward promised by the President.
The President’s gesture of appreciation sparked celebrations across the country, with social media flooded with praise for both the team and the Head of State. Many fans saw the reward as a much-needed investment in local football and a motivational boost that could inspire the team to go further in the tournament.
Photos shared online showed the players beaming with joy as they received confirmation of the reward. Some took to their personal platforms to express their gratitude, with a few calling it a historic moment for Kenyan football.
“This is a huge encouragement. We are proud to represent the country, and knowing the President has our back gives us even more motivation to fight for the flag,” said one of the senior players.
In the run-up to the match, Geoffrey Ruku, a Member of Parliament, had urged all public servants to wear Harambee Stars jerseys during the CHAN tournament in a show of support. His call came as part of a broader national campaign to rally behind the team and create a patriotic environment during the competition.
“Let’s all stand with our boys. It’s not just about football, it’s about our identity, our pride. Wear the jersey, wave the flag and cheer them on,” Ruku said.
This patriotic wave was evident in the stadium, which was filled with thousands of enthusiastic fans dressed in red, green and black the national colours.

With the first win secured, Kenya now turns its attention to their next group-stage match against Angola, scheduled for Thursday, August 7. Another win would significantly increase their chances of qualifying for the knockout stage and could unlock further rewards from the presidency, as hinted at by government sources.
The team’s technical bench, led by head coach Engin Firat, has already begun preparations for the crucial encounter. Firat emphasised that while the financial reward is welcome, the players are focused on winning and making the country proud.
“We are grateful for the support from the President and the fans. It gives the team more confidence, but our main goal remains to go as far as we can in this tournament,” Firat stated.
Kenya is co-hosting the 2024 CHAN tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania, adding to the sense of pride and responsibility. Hosting duties have raised expectations, and the players are feeling not only the pressure but also the excitement of performing in front of a home crowd.
Sports analysts have applauded the government’s proactive support of the team, noting that financial incentives can improve performance, morale and accountability.
