Coffee farmers in the country are expected to earn more from their produce following an increase in prices.
The Cabinet Secretary of Co-operatives and MSMEs Simon Chelugui has said the price of premium coffee has risen from Ksh13500 to Ksh52500 per bag.
Chelugui added that,
“The reforms we started earlier in the year are paying off. That is a very notable increase. This increase shows that the coffee reforms are working and farmers are winning big.”
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been spearheading the reforms in the coffee sector that has seen him call out cartels and brokers for taking advantage of farmers and earning big profits from their hard work.
Chelugui also stated,
“There are 6 million Kenyans who depend on coffee for a livelihood and the reform agenda is putting a smile on their faces. As the leader of the technical team, I am happy with the progress made and the results achieved so far.”
Additionally, he revealed that ‘following a global interest in Kenya’s coffee, some 32 companies are now participating in the Nairobi Coffee Exchange (NCE), which has led to better prices for farmers’.
He added that the price increases come following ‘six months of hard work and unwavering commitment’ explaining that farmers are the biggest beneficiaries as good prices continue to be recorded at the coffee exchange.
