Nairobi, Kenya – The government has declared Friday, March 20, as a public holiday to mark Eid al-Fitr.

In a gazette notice dated March 18, 2026, the Cabinet Secretary for the Interior and National Administration, Kipchumba Murkomen, issued the declaration to the general information based on the Public Holidays Act
“It is notified for the general information of the public that, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Friday, the 20th March, 2026, shall be a Public Holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr,” read the notice seen by News Nine in part.
During the holiday, the Muslim community will mark the end of Ramadan’s dawn-to-sunset fasting, which began on February 21, 2026.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, a period during which Muslims don’t eat or drink from sunrise to sunset. They also avoid other physical needs during this time.
