Nairobi, Kenya – Equity Bank Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) James Mwangi has been named CEO of the year in the 2026 banking sector awards.

Mwangi’s award came as a recognition of his innovative leadership in the banking sector, which drives financial inclusion in Kenya and across the East African region.

Why James Mwangi is the CEO of the year

By driving growth, innovation, and financial inclusion, Mwangi’s style of leadership also earned Equity Bank a prestigious award of the Overall Best Bank in Kenya at the 2026 Think Business Banking Awards.

The lender topped out in 10 award categories and finished second in two others.

CEO Mwangi attributed the achievements to years of deliberate investment in a strong financial institution that has had an impact on the financial sector in the country and across the region.

“This recognition as the Overall Best Bank in Kenya reflects years of deliberate investment in building a resilient, inclusive and future-ready financial institution,” said Mwangi as quoted by Capital Business.
