Harambee Stars 3-2 win against Taifa Stars: Why it deserves a celebration

Kenya is known for having some of the best athletes in the
world when it comes to marathons and some short races. The country has also made
a name for itself in rugby and women volleyball teams. However, when it comes
to soccer, the journey has not been appealing.

Harambee Stars has had trouble shining and qualifying for tournaments
in the continent. Even when the team does qualify, Kenyans are not always sure
of a win despite their positive sentiments.

Take for example when Algeria defeated Kenya 2-0 in the ongoing
AFCON contest. Many were disappointed in the team. Some citizens are candid. They
do not withhold their opinions even when they are about their beloved country.

However, when Harambee Stars made a comeback on Thursday June
27, 2019 against Tanzania’s Taifa Stars with a 3-2win, the tune changed. Many conveyed
congratulatory messages to the team including President Uhuru Kenyatta, the DP William
Ruto, and ODM’s Raila Odinga

Kenyans did not hesitate to ridicule Taifa Stars’ loss with
hilarious, ‘brutal’ memes on Twitter considering it is the first team to be eliminated
in AFCON games 2019.

Why does Harambee Star’s victory call for a celebration?

According to Standard
Media, Kenya had won only once in 15 previous matches in the AFCON
competition. After yesterday’s match, they have three points from two games in
Group C, level with Senegal.

Even if Kenya lose their final group match against the Lions
of Teranga, they will hope to squeeze into the knockout phase as one of the
four best third-place teams.

Besides, it feels nice to make fun of the neighbouring
country Tanzania, which is currently in a diplomatic row with Kenya after
Starehe member of Parliament Charles Njagua alias Jaguar made xenophobic remarks about foreign traders.

That is not all. Presidents Magufuli and Uhuru have had their
share of misunderstandings starting with Tanzania holding on to cattle from
Kenya. Nonetheless, a win is a win and Kenya should be happy it is representing
East Africa in the Africa Cup of Nations games.
