MOMBASA, Kenya – Passenger rail service to Mombasa Central Business District (CBD) from Mombasa Terminus has resumed as of today, Wednesday, September 17, 2025.
An affair to which many had grown so devoted came to an end on April 29, 2017, as the Lunatic Line passenger service train to Mombasa made its final journey.

However, the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service is now intended to provide comfortable transportation for tourists, visitors, and locals living along the Metre Gauge Railway corridor to the Mombasa Central Business District (CBD).
President William Ruto presided over the commissioning of the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service.
Linking the Mombasa Island to the Mombasa Mainland via the Makupa Causeway Railway Bridge, the service is designed to offer an affordable, reliable and efficient service.
“Mombasa is increasingly growing into the hub of logistics in the region. We are upgrading infrastructure to enhance port efficiency, boost performance and generate more jobs for our young people,” said President Ruto as he addressed the residents of Miritini after the inaugural ride on the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service connecting Miritini and Mombasa CBD.

The head of state also inspected the Kwa Jomvu Interchange, which he said will significantly improve traffic flow, boost connectivity and ease the movement of goods.
Through this, the Kenya Railways Corporation can comfortably begin the Commuter Rail service in the Mombasa SGR terminus
This new development is set to ease the nearly 14 kilometres journey from Mombasa (SGR) Terminus to Mombasa Central Business District (CBD).
According to the KRC, this will guarantee thousands of passengers arriving at the Mombasa Terminus convenient, quick, and accessible commuter services.
The new service, which offers a “Park and Ride” or “Drop and Ride” option, will connect Madaraka Express train passengers from Nairobi to Mombasa’s central business district.
The train will stop in Mombasa Central Business District, Shimanzi, Mazeras, Changamwe West, Changamwe East, and Miritini.
What is the government to do to improve the transport sector
Davis Chirchir, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and transit, stated the government’s dedication to enhancing public transit during an inspection tour on September 5, 2025, pointing out that “upon commencement of operations, the service is projected to transport approximately 4,000 commuters daily.”
The Mombasa Central Railway Station and the Mombasa Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) terminus in Miritini are connected by the Sh4.2 billion project, which was finished in August 2025.
It included upgrading 16.6 kilometres of meter-gauge railway, erecting a 2.3-kilometre railway bridge over the Makupa Causeway, and constructing new passenger stations in Mombasa town and Miritini.
Since the start of SGR services, a commuter rail has run at the Nairobi terminal, stopping at Syokimau, Imara Daima, Makadara, and Nairobi CBD.
