Makadara Law Court has released a woman from Dandora on a bond of Ksh 50, 000 or an alternative cash bail of Ksh 20,000 after she denied charges of pouring hot cooking oil on a neighbour who copied her hairstyle.
Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Justus Kituku, Catherine Wanjiru was accused of causing profound harm to Sherry Nyanchomba.
The case will be mentioned on March 16 before hearing begins on March 30.
On January 16, 2023, Wanjiru allegedly poured hot cooking oil on the victim for dying her hair the same way she did hers.
At around midnight when Nyanchomba went back to her house, Wanjiru was deliberately waiting for her at the gate.
Wanjiru asked her why she had dyed her hair exactly like hers before proceeding to a nearby fish vendor’s stand, and allegedly whisking the fryer spoon with hot cooking oil to Nyanchomba’s face before grabbing her and getting into a fight.
Amid the fight, the suspect allegedly pulled Nyanchomba’s jaw, dislocating her teeth.
The victim was rescued from the rough hands of the suspect after neighbours intervened.
Nyanchomba was speedily taken to a nearby clinic for first aid and thereafter rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital in Embakasi for further treatment.
After getting discharged, she reported the accident to the police station. Wanjiru was summoned and apprehended by the police.
The incident caused controversy across social platforms with Kenyans on X attributing it to jealousy and comparing it to a similar incident that occurred in a salon on July 20, 2017, in one of the estates in Nairobi.
The two women were fighting outside a salon in an uncontrollable manner attracting a crowd with one accusing the other of gossiping about her, saying she was sleeping around with a caretaker.
The fight started as a war of words before evolving into a physical one. Bystanders urged the two to cease the fight and eventually, a man came in to separate them.
