The coronavirus infections in the
country continue to surge with the number of counties affected rising to 38.
The recent counties to record
infections include Nyeri, with 3 positive cases, and Garisa –recording one case
as at Monday, June 8.
Addressing the public during the
daily Covid-19 brief, health CAS Rashid Aman said the ministry has recorded 95 new
positive cases, with 57 being males and 38 females.
Out of the 95, Mombasa registered
the highest number of cases at 56, Nairobi (13), Busia (10), Kajiado (6),
Kilifi (3), Nyeri (3), Kitui, Kwale, Garissa and Marsabit counties both
recording one case each.
Dr. Aman said the test was
contacted on 1, 096 samples, bringing the total number of infections in the
country to 2,862, out of 98,439 samples since March.
The new cases were taken from 92
Kenyans and 3 foreign nationals between the ages of 1-72 years.
In Mombasa, the 56 cases were
recorded in Mvita (22), Changamwe (13), Nyali (7), Kisauni (6), Likoni (5),
Jomvu (3).
The Nairobi cases are from Kibra
(10), and one case each in Lang’ata, Kasarani, Dagoretti North while all the 3
Nyeri infections recorded from healthcare workers in Nyeri Central.
Meanwhile the ministry recorded a
daily high in the number of recoveries to 97, bringing the total number of
those recovered from the virus to 849.
Dr Aman applauded efforts by
frontline healthcare workers, adding that the higher number of recoveries is a
good indication and ease strain on health care facilities.
“This is commendable and is proof
that contracting the virus is not a health sentence. We expect that these
numbers will be able to rise…this doesn’t mean that we should lose hope. As a
matter of fact, most hospitals dealing with these cases have done exceptional
jobs,” he said.
He called upon Kenyans to continue
observing hygiene and strictly follow containment measures set and directed by
the ministry.
However, the number of deaths have
risen to 85, after one patient succumbed from the disease in the last 24 hours.
