NAIROBI, Kenya – Former President Uhuru Kenyatta is among notable Kenyans who continue to mourn the death of former Cabinet minister and ex-Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo.
On Saturday, December 13, 2025, Uhuru joined the people of Lugari and Kenyans at large in mourning the death of Jirongo, who died in a road accident along the Naivasha-Nakuru Highway early Saturday morning.

In a statement from his office, Uhuru remembered the late Jirongo as a bold and principled leader who passionately championed the interests of the youth and worked tirelessly for the nation.
“His courage, wit, and commitment to standing up for what he believed in will forever be etched in the minds of those who interacted with him,” he said.
The former Head of State extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and supporters of the late Lugari legislator, praying that God grants them comfort and strength during this time of grief.
At the same time, KANU National Chairman Gideon Moi said, “It is with a deep sense of sorrow that we mourn the loss of our brother and friend, Hon. Cyrus Jirongo.”
What did the late Cyrus Jirongo told the Moi family
According to Gideon, Jirongo was known to the Moi’s first as a family man.
“He spoke with pride about his family, and he carried that sense of responsibility into every space he entered. Those who spent time with him knew his warmth, his humour, and his confidence, but also his deep loyalty to the people closest to him,” said Gideon.
Over the years, Gideon disclosed that he shared many moments with Jirongo.
“He was a familiar presence, and at no point did he ever hide his convictions. He was bold in thought and action. He spoke his mind freely and engaged others openly. Our conversations were honest, sometimes even challenging, but always rooted in mutual respect,” added Gideon.
Why the Moi family is indebted to Cyrus Jirongo
As a political figure, Gideon said the late Lugari MP played a visible and influential role in the country’s public life, particularly during the final years of KANU as the ruling party.
“He was energetic, fearless, and unapologetic about his views. Whether one agreed with him or not, he brought passion to politics and left a clear mark on the national conversation. On behalf of the Moi family and KANU, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who loved him. May God’s strength, grace, and peace be with them during this sorrowful time. May the soul of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo rest in eternal peace,” Gideon, the Chancellor of Kabarak University, wrote on his X account.
Earlier, news9.africa reported that Jirongo died in a road accident that occurred at the Karai area near Naivasha town in Nakuru County at around 3 am.
His body has since been moved from the Naivasha Sub-County Referral Hospital mortuary to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.
