NAIROBI, Kenya – More than 1 million candidates have sat for the second last Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams.

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Migos Ogamba said the KCSE 2026 examinations saw an increase in the number of candidates from 995,860 reported in 2025 to 1,048,355.
CS Ogamba revealed that this year’s KCSE will be conducted in 10,693 examination centres.
“The administration of this year’s national examinations and assessments commenced on Monday, October 19, 2026. Since then, we have had a largely seamless exercise.
“The Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KEPSEA) concluded on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. The Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) concluded on Friday 30th October, 2026,” said Ogamba.
Ogamba noted that the past two weeks were used to administer examinations in elective subjects with a small candidature, such as foreign languages, music and technical subjects.
Examination challenges and malpractices
The CS assured that the government took the necessary steps to address any emerging challenges to the examination processes.
“Earlier today, for example, we relocated two examination centres in Moyale Sub-County, Marsabit County, in view of the insecurity occasioned by clan clashes along the Kenya-Ethiopia border.
“Special arrangements have been made to deliver and administer examinations to 7 hospitalised candidates and 5 candidates in correctional facilities. We call for continued support, especially in reporting any cases of fraud or malpractice,” he added.
The CS further called for collaboration among stakeholders to ensure that the results of the examinations and assessments reflect the honest work of the learners, wishing all candidates the very best in the examinations and assessments.
