TRANS NZOIA, Kenya – Drama ensued in Kitale town, Trans Nzoia County, after a middle-aged man joined the now-infamous tree-hugging challenge to raise school fees for his child joining St. Joseph Girls’, Kitale.

In the recent past, a section of Kenyans across the country has been participating in the tree-hugging challenge to raise awareness on social and economic issues.
However, when word reached area MP, Caleb Amisi, that one of his constituents had joined the challenge, the lawmaker, known for his philanthropic ways, immediately sent him Sh53,000 so the student could be admitted to school.
Why did a Kitale man embark on a tree-hugging challenge?
Reportedly, despite receiving the money, the yet-to-be-identified man refused to come down the tree, claiming the money was too little.
“I need around Sh150,000 to settle school fees for my daughter and other child,” the man claimed in a separate video.
He went on hugging the tree until around 8 PM, refusing to disengage.
It was at this juncture that the local youth, seemingly irked by his behaviour, swung into action.
“Unapewa 50K unakataa na bado unakumbatia miti? Kwanza, umetoka wapi? Toka hapa!” the youth were heard saying.
Moments later, the tree was freed, and the man was freed from his challenge.
How did Saboti MP Caleb Amisi react to the move?
In a now-viral video, a standby ambulance could be seen leaving the scene as the man fled for his safety from the angry mob.
Meanwhile, the daughter was admitted and is currently in school, learning in peace.
“It is unfortunate that some Kenyans are using this tree-hugging challenge as a con game. People should engage in this challenge because of their passion for a particular course,” said MP Amisi.
