Murang’a, Kenya – Kenya is on course to achieve a circular economy through advanced plastic waste management solutions.

The strategic partnership signed between HACO Industries, Murang’a County Government and Progreen Innovations demonstrates this bold move by the public and private sector players.
Why circular economy?
Signed on Tuesday, November 25, the collaboration aims to advance plastic waste management and accelerate Kenya’s transition toward a circular economy.
It marked a milestone in uniting the government, the private sector and innovation partners to tackle the growing challenge of post-consumer plastic waste through practical, scalable solutions.
The partnership will see the three entities co-design and implement a plastic take-back and recycling initiative in Murang’a County. The project will introduce community collection points and branded bins for post-consumer waste, while driving awareness and behaviour change through educational campaigns.
It also aligned with Kenya’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework by promoting accountability throughout the product life cycle — from manufacturing and consumption to recovery and reuse.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, the Deputy Governor of Murang’a County, Stephen Munania, underscored the county’s commitment to environmental stewardship and public-private partnerships.
Munania noted that the initiative represents a forward-thinking model for sustainable development that will create employment, promote cleaner communities and preserve the environment for future generations.
HACO Industries Manufacturing Director, Peter Ndichu, emphasised that the partnership demonstrates how responsible manufacturing can extend beyond factory gates.
“Sustainability is not only about how we produce, but also about how we take responsibility for what happens after use. Together with Murang’a County and Progreen Innovations, we aim to close the loop by transforming waste into value and setting a precedent for other manufacturers to follow,” Ndichu said in a press statement sent to News Nine.
Progreen Innovations CEO, Eng. James Muritu added that the partnership will leverage the company’s technical expertise in ecofuel processing, recycling logistics and waste management infrastructure to ensure efficient implementation and measurable environmental outcomes.
Framework for plastic waste management
Under the agreement, the three partners will collaborate to establish a network of plastic waste collection sites, conduct community education drives, and pilot innovative recycling models.
They will also monitor impact through data collection on plastic volumes diverted, community participation, and emission reductions. Insights from the Murang’a pilot will guide the program’s scale-up to additional counties across Kenya.
The partnership reaffirms a growing shift in Kenya’s sustainability landscape, where the public and private sectors work hand in hand to build practical, community-based solutions that reduce environmental harm and foster shared prosperity.
