The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has urged all road users to exercise caution on roads even as the rainy season persists across the country.

In a notice, NTSA acknowledged the hazardous conditions presented by heavy rainfall in various parts of the nation, which has caused flooding in some areas and bridges compromised.
“With the onset of heavy rainfall across the country as advised by the weatherman, the Authority cautions the public of potentially hazardous road conditions. The ongoing rainfall and foggy conditions in some areas are significantly increasing road risks due to reduced visibility and slippery road condition,” the notice read in part.
NTSA urged pedestrians and motorists to collectively cooperate to prevent risky encounters and ensure safety on the roads even as the Kenya Meteorological Department predicts more rainfall in different locations.
“We appeal to motorists to be extra cautious and mindful of their safety and that of other road users. We urge pedestrians to use designated crossing points to avoid unnecessary risks,” it added.
Furthermore, the Authority advised passengers to speak out when conditions on the road jeopardize safety.
“Passengers are also encouraged to take responsibility for their own safety by speaking out and asking the driver to stop if the situation becomes unsafe.”
Safety advisory to motorists
Additionally, the NTSA issued cautionary measures for individuals driving in the rain. It urged the removal of stalled vehicles as soon as possible, keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, and driving slowly as stopping completely in rainy condition is challenging.
It also advised drivers to turn headlights on when it is raining to increase visibility for oncoming traffic, always use the windshield to clear raindrops, and not attempt to drive through flooded roads.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Let us all work together to make our roads safer,” the notice elaborated.
Effects of heavy rainfall season in Kenya so far
As Kenya experiences the March-April-May rainy season, farmers across the nation are embarking on various farming activities to contribute to the national food basket.
The heavy rainfall has already caused inconveniences on Kenyan roads making roads impassable, affected drainage systems, and rendered bridges unusable.
It remains to be seen how the season unfolds as the Meteorological Department issues updates on weather conditions in various parts of the country, urging caution in lowlands and other flood-prone areas.
The rains come after some parts of the country experienced drought, which caused hunger, food shortages, and lack of water and animal feed.
